Diversity: unique, common and both

"Conversations with God" author Neale Donald Walsche tweeted about good and bad a couple of days ago. It got me thinking about diversity.

As you know, my perspective reframes the model of categorisation and representation, which most people associate with diversity. For me diversity is the synergy of our uniqueness and commonality.

But Walsche's tweet got me thinking again. He said:

Applying this logic to diversity adds another dimension:

1. We are unique.

2. We are common.

3. We are both unique and common.

Holding these three paradoxical truths about who we are in relation to ourselves and each other creates an interesting dynamic. It asks us to consider how we are unique and common, but also how being both unique and common impacts on our identity and relationships.

Which is another third thing altogether.
